About Java Central Coffee Roasters
Java Central Coffee Roasters opened in 2016 as Westerville’s first and only coffee roaster. As an extension of Java Central’s café, we seek to share the fascinating process of coffee production with our community, as well as provide a local source for unique and interesting coffees from around the world.
Our head roaster and coffee buyer is a Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) certified coffee roaster – one of only a few in Central Ohio. Coffee roasting requires an incredible amount of training, education and practice. It is both a culinary science and an art. Java Central’s approach to roasting focuses on data collection and continual quality control testing. This ensures every cup you brew is consistently great.
“We’re about approachable coffee! – no pretension.”
We’re proud to cater to all palettes of coffee lover. Our single origin line features coffees we’ve selected and imported right to our door. These coffees are selected specifically for their unique flavor profiles, sustainable production and at an affordable cost for you. Sustainability is supremely important to us when we select these coffees. The global coffee industry faces many incredible challenges. If we want to enjoy great coffees in the future, we have an obligation to support the amazing people who work tirelessly to bring it to us.
Java Central Coffee Roasters also offers our own proprietary coffee blends. Blending coffee is a great way to enhance the best flavors of each coffee. Coffee blends are popular for their consistent quality and taste. When a coffee used in a blend is no longer in season, another similar coffee may be used to maintain the blends overall quality and character.
The Importance of Sustainability
Your local coffee shop is only the tip of the coffee industry iceberg! Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world and a multi-billion dollar industry. Millions of people put food on their table by producing the coffee we drink. Coffee is a highly processed agricultural product and requires a huge amount of manpower to bring it to your cup. As consumers and lovers of coffee, we must consider the challenges coffee producers face if we are going to enjoy great coffee in the future.
Almost all coffee is grown between the tropics – and mostly in underdeveloped nations. Issues such as poverty, famine, drought, civil unrest, lack of education and underemployment plague the coffee industry worldwide. However, the worst threat to coffee is the effect of global climate change on coffee growing regions. Several extensive climate studies have shown an increasing reduction of land suitable for coffee production. Even a few degrees of temperature increase can drastically lower a coffee plant’s yield. The changing climate has increased the amount of severe weather in these regions, leading to storms, droughts, flooding and heat waves. The subsequent impact of climate change on these countries exacerbates already fragile sociological conditions, making daily life even more difficult for the farmers.
But there’s hope for coffee, yet. A great deal of work is being done to understand the most effective methods of sustainable coffee production. As green coffee buyers, Java Central is proud to do our part to contribute to this work. We only buy certified (or verified) fairly traded, sustainably produced coffees. This means our coffee has been harvested and processed by people who earn a living wage, using environment-friendly methods. We do this because we know how important it is for you, our patrons, to be an ethical consumer. In supporting Java Central, you’re supporting all the people down the coffee supply chain. If you would like to know more about our coffees, do not hesitate to contact us!
